Hunter dies after Slipping off cliff
At approximately 1:15 a.m. on Tuesday October 25,2016, Kane County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch received a call about an overdue individual who had been deer hunting near Wahweap Wash, which is located east of Grosvenor Arch off of Cottonwood Canyon Road. The family’s last contact with 42 year old Ryan Shakespear from Cedar City was around 6:30 Monday evening. The family has a cabin in the area and had been in contact with Ryan by radio. Ryan’s family had started searching just after dark on Monday and searched all night in the mud and rain trying to locate him. Shakespear was familiar with the area but the Heavy rains which had been occurring in the area caused the family to be concerned about his well being. When he had not returned by Tuesday morning, Kane County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue began formulating a response plan. A helicopter from Classic Air Medical out of Page Arizona was contacted to assist with the search efforts. A search and rescue squad was dispatched out of Kanab, Utah with the equipment to search the roads and trails with 4 wheel drive vehicles, hiking crews that could search on foot, and a rope rescue team if needed for a canyoneering type rescue. While in route to the area, the search crews were notified that family member had located Ryan. Ryan’s brothers were able guide his father and an uncle to his location. The uncle confirmed that Ryan was deceased. It appears he had lost his footing and had fallen approximately 150 feet. Because of his location at the bottom of the cliff it was possible that a rope rescue team would be needed to get him out.

The helicopter crew determined that they could land close to the Shakespear’s body in the bottom of the canyon. They flew to Kanab and picked up the Kane County Sheriff’s Office medical investigator and transported him to the scene. After completing the investigation of the accident scene by the investigator, Ryan’s body was transported by the helicopter to Sheriff’s Office personnel who were waiting at Grosvenor Arch. Ryan was then transferred to Mosdell Mortuary from Kanab who transported him to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office who will determine the cause of death.

Ryan Leaves behind a wife and 6 children. He worked for the BLM located in Cedar City, Utah.

The Kane County Sheriff’s Office and Search crews wish to express their condolences to Ryan’s family and co-workers for their loss.
At approximately 8:00 a.m. on Thursday June 12, 2014, the
body of a 22 year old male was recovered near the boat docks in Bullfrog

Tuesday, June 10th, 22 year old Alec McQueen
from Salt Lake City, was boating with two female friends in the Bullfrog
area. All three are employees of
ARAMARK, and were living and working in Bullfrog for the summer. They were returning to the dock area about
7p.m. As the boat was pulling into an open
slip to park, the driver turned off the boat and Alec who was sitting on the
back of the boat jumped in. The driver
could see Alec in the water a few feet behind the boat. She looked away and when she turned back a
couple of seconds later she could not see Alec.

When they could not find Alec, they called 911 and a
National Park Service, (NPS), ranger arrived shortly after. Other personnel arrived from NPS and Utah
State Parks. Notification was made to
the NPS dive team and the Kane County Sheriff’s Office. Because it was so late in the day, it was
decided that a search would be initiated the next morning.

Wednesday morning the NPS Lake Powell dive team was
transported by plane from Wahweep Marina to Bullfrog to assess the situation. When
their dive boat arrived in early afternoon, they attempted to use their underwater
robot and sonar to locate Alec. The
sonar malfunctioned and after several tries, it was determined that it could
not be fixed on site. Three divers from
the NPS team were put in the water and attempted to search the initial target
area. They searched at a depth of about
90 feet in zero visibility conditions.
They made several passes over the area working completely by feel before
having to return to the surface. At the
same time, a request was made to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office for the use
of their dive team, robot, and sonar.
They arrived in Bullfrog at about 4 a.m. Thursday morning.

After a 6 a.m. briefing on Thursday, the Summit County
team launched their boat and were able to locate Alec’s body about 7:30 in the
primary search area at a depth of 113 feet.
The National Park Service’s divers were then able to retrieve the body
and bring it to the surface. The Kane
County Sheriff was on scene and took position of the body and transported it to
the Utah Medical Examiner’s Office in Salt Lake City.

Alec’s Parents and siblings were on scene at the time of
the recovery and were able to see Alec before he was transported by Sheriff
Smith.

Thanks to all those involved in this difficult
incident. Numerous agencies responded to
the scene to include National Park Service, Utah State Parks, Kane County
Sheriff’s Office, and Summit County Search and Rescue. The case remains under joint investigation.

Multiagency Rescue at Lake Powell

Saturday April 5th, the Kane County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue team (KCSAR) participated in a mutual aid rescue with Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, (GCNRA), Coconino County Search and Rescue, (CCSAR), and the Utah Highway Patrol Aero Division.

At around 7am, a male individual from Grand Junction Colorado began climbing Gregory Butte which is located at buoy 26 in Last Chance Bay At Lake Powell. A little after 9am, he was over 500 feet up the cliff face when an anchor that he had placed in the rock failed causing him to fall approximately 30 feet. His fall was stopped by his previous anchor and rope leaving him hanging on the cliff face by his harness. When the first anchor came out of the sandstone face, it also caused a large slab of stone to break free which fell hitting him in the head, severely injuring the climber. It is very possible that his life was saved by the use of a proper helmet.

His friends, who were watching him from a boat below, had to drive to an area where they could get cell phone coverage. The call went to Glen Canyon Dispatch who contacted the Kane County Sheriff's Office Dispatch center with a request for help believing the accident location was in Kane County.

That morning Kane County Search and Rescue was already involved in a joint training in Kanab Utah with Coconino County Search and Rescue, and a Utah Highway Patrol helicopter. When the call came in, the combined teams began working on a rescue plan. It was later determined that the location of the incident was actually in San Juan County. After consulting with San Juan County's Sheriff and Search and rescue, they requested that Kane County continue with the operation because we were closer and had resources ready to respond.

Two GCNRA rescue personnel had already responded by boat and helicopter to the scene. UHP pilot Shane Oldfield and technical flight officer Sgt. Ryan Bauer transported three KCSAR rescue personnel and gear from Kanab to the top of Gregory Butte where they joined with the GCNRA team. A team from CCSAR as well as additional personnel from KCSAR responded by vehicle to the Page Arizona Airport where they could be be picked up by the UHP helicopter and transported to the scene if needed.

The five man team at Gregory Butte was able to drill and set anchors on top of the Butte. A GCNRA medic was lowered to the injured climber. He was able to secure the climber and both were then raised back to the top by the other four rescuers. The injured climber was transported by the UHP helicopter to a waiting medical helicopter from Guardian Air out of Page Arizona. He was then transported to the Page hospital.

All rescue crews then returned to their respective areas. This is another great example of the collaborative efforts and relationships that have been build and fostered between the agencies of Southern Utah, Northern Arizona, Utah Highway patrol and our Federal Partners at Lake Powell. Thanks to all involved in this successful and safe rescue.

Additional information:

The 30 year old injured climber was flown to Flagstaff Arizona Hospital, and not to Page Arizona as the original post stated. He is currently in ICU but expected to recover. His injuries were serious and it will take time to heal.

The climber and two friends had been camping at the base of Gregory Butte since Thursday April 3rd. The individual had completed a couple of previous shorter climbs on Gregory Butte Thursday and Friday. He is considered an expert climber. Climbing in the sandstone like he was doing is considered to be one of the most dangerous kinds of climbing next to climbing without safety equipment.

<span style="color: #18150f; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 9pt;">Construction has started on US-89 North of Kanab
between mileposts 65 and 68. The road is now closed to all traffic

The road closure is necessary while construction crews blast rock
cliffs and clear debris. This will allow for the realignment of
US-89 through the area and create a wider and safer roadway. The

US-89 from the 300 North intersection in Kanab to the Kanab Creek
Bridge near MP 68.

This week on the project crews will continue to pioneer temporary
roads to allow for drilling equipment to have access. The drilling
equipment will begin drilling for blasting operations when
feasible.

A test blast could be conducted on the project this week pending
approval by appropriate agencies. This blast will be coordinated
with local officials and state fire officials.

Motorists will notice an increase in truck traffic. The added
trucks will continue to move material from the dig sites to the
dump sites. Most debris removed from the dig sites will be used as
fill material in other areas on the project.
Work continues on a new box culvert near MP66. Crews are forming
the new box and reinforcing the structure with rebar. Lengthening
the structure will allow for the new alignment of the roadway and
more efficiently handle run-off water.

The couple began their hike about 8:00 am Utah time. They occasionally met with other hikers making the same trip. After spending some time at the wave, they began their return trip to the trail head. They lost the trail a couple of times on the way back, which would have been during the hot part of the day by then, and spent a couple of extra hours trying to find the correct path back to their vehicle. The couple of extra hours in the heat and hiking in the sand took their toll on Elisabeth and her legs finally gave out and she could go no farther. Anthony hiked for a ways to find a cell phone signal and made a call for help.

Because of the serious condition of Mrs. Bervel, a medical helicopter was dispatched from Page Arizona to fly directly to the scene. A Kane County Sheriff’ Deputy and an ambulance from Big Water Utah were also dispatched to respond by ground. When the helicopter arrived, Elisabeth was already in cardiac arrest. They tried performing CPR, but were unable to revive her.

Elisabeth’s body was transported by the Helicopter to the Kanab Utah Airport where it she was transferred to the care of Mosdell Mortuary under the direction of Sheriff Smith who is the Medical Investigator for Kane County. The body will be transported to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office in Salt Lake City. The cause of death is still under investigation.

The Bervels have two sons ages 4 and 5 who were with family in Arizona.

This event once again demonstrates the inherent risks associated with hiking in southern Utah’s desert country this time of year. Even though the Bervels had tried to make sure they were prepared for this hike, the elements proved to be stronger. This makes 4 hiking related deaths this summer in Kane County. Three of those deaths have been in close proximity on the trail to the wave, and the fourth occurring at another popular hiking spot off of the Hole in the Rock Road south of Escalante Utah. The ages of the deceased have ranged from 27 to 70 years of age.

At about 8:45 am on 7/4/13, Kane County Dispatch received a call from some hikers who were returning from a hike to “The Wave” near the Utah/Arizona border. They had located the body of an elderly female who was deceased a short distance off the trail. The Wave is a popular hiking spot that only allows 20 permits each day. 10 of the daily permits are issued on the internet several months ahead of time. The other 10 are issued by a lottery at the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument visitor’s Center in Kanab Utah. Some days 70 to 100 people will show up for the lottery for the available 10 tickets for the next day. Last year over 48,000 individuals applied for the 7300 available tickets.

Sheriff Lamont Smith, who is a medical investigator for the state medical examiner’s office, and Deputy Brent Smith flew from the Wire Pass Trailhead on the House Rock Valley Road in a helicopter from Classic Helicopters in Page Arizona. After documenting the scene, the body was flown by sling from the site to the trailhead.

On the return trip to the scene to pick up the sheriff’s Office personnel, the helicopter located what appeared to be another body about 250 yards away from the first. The second body was also investigated and flown back to the trailhead.

Ulrich Wahli, age 70, and his wife Patricia Wahli, age 69, had permits to hike to The Wave on Wednesday July 3. Mr. & Mrs. Wahli are from Campbell California. They would have been hiking in temperatures in excess of 100 degrees. It is believed that they passed away during the afternoon on Wednesday July 3rd. Patricia was lying under a tree as though she was trying to find some relief from the heat, or may have been feeling ill. Ulrich may have been trying to get to help when he was also overcome by the heat.

The bodies will be transferred to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office where we may be able to learn more about the possible reasons for the deaths.

This is a difficult time of year to be hiking in the Wire Pass area of Kane County. Add that to the high heat we are experiencing right now, and it makes for a lethal combination. If you must hike, it is best to do it early in the morning, and make sure you have enough water and supplies.

At approximately 9:00 am this morning, the Utah Department of Public Safety dive team left the dock at Wahweep Marina to begin searching the accident scene area. At this time they have been searching a little more than two hours. The state team uses “Side Scan Sonar” technology. They will continue searching in the area looking for possible “targets” that could be a body. Once a target is located, it will provide a GPS coordinate of the target which can then be used for further investigation.

The National Park Service’s robot suffered some malfunctions Friday. Their submersible robot has sonar capability, as well as a camera, lights, and a mechanical arm. The sonar capability is what is not working at this time. They are waiting on parts or a loaner robot, which should arrive on Monday, while theirs is being repaired.

If the state team is able to locate a viable target, the Park service team can still use their current robot with its camera and mechanical arm to investigate the target, and/or retrieve a body.

Officials from Utah State Parks will be handling the crash investigation. The damaged power boat will be moved to the Wahweep marina area where it will removed from the water for further investigation. The investigation will take place the first part of next week.

Coconino County court house packed. Extra chairs have been brought in to accommodate all those in attendance. Judge is reviewing the case.

Brian Harris' wife Shauna is reading a statement about how her family has been affected by the death of her husband. Shauna asked judge to sentence Curley with natural life in prison with no chance of parole.

Audience consists of most of the officers from the Kane County Sheriff's Office, the family of Deputy Harris and family of Scott Curley.

Audience was shown a slide show about the life of Deputy Harris.

Scott Curley was allowed to read a statement to the court.

Curley's attorney making points for sentence allowing for parole
-says he was mentally ill.
-says Curley has family support.
-says he was young at the time.
-drug and alchol abuse was a factor.

Prosecutor now addressing the judge.
-says Curley stole rifle with the intent to kill.
-says Curley knew what he was doing.
-asked judge for natural life in jail.
-says he will kill in the future if let out.

Judge ruled that he feels Curley would not have killed someone if he wasn't mentally ill. He sentenced him to life in prison with possibility of parole after 25 years. He was given an additional 12 years for other charges which will be served concurrently. With time served he should not be eligible for parole for about 35 years.

Kane County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the Coconino Sheriff's Office and Coconino County Attorneys who have put so much time and effort into this case on our behalf. It has been a long emotional two years for the Harris family and the Southern Utah law enforcement community.

There is definitely some disappointment in the judges decision and the reasons he used to arrive at that decision. Hopefully the family and friends of Brian can now begin to heal and move on. Brian is still greatly missed by all those who knew him. Not a day goes by that we are not reminded in some way about him.

Goodbye old friend.

Rollover accident in Kane County ends in fatality.

At approximately 9:00 AM Friday October 12, 2012, Kane County Sheriff’s Office dispatch center received a 911 call from an individual stating that they had been involved in a rollover accident. The accident had occurred around 9:00 PM the night before.

The three occupants of a 1998 Ford Explorer had left Kanab, Utah the evening of October 11th with intentions to drive to a friend’s home in the Deer Springs Ranch area of Kane County. The individuals were unfamiliar with the area and became lost. Evening rain storms in Kane County and possibly slick roads may have contributed to the accident. The vehicle slid off the road and rolled, ejecting two females. Ejected were the driver Tanya Sales, 47, and back seat passenger Jaylyne Doramus, 21. The front seat male passenger, Gary Cross, 55, remained in the vehicle. The female ejected from the back seat was fatally injured. The male passenger was able to assist the driver back into the vehicle for shelter from the ongoing rain storm where they remained throughout the night. All three were residents of Kanab.

When it was light enough Friday morning, they were able to find a cell phone in the wreckage to call for help. The phone, which was only being used as a camera, was not activated at the time, but was still able to make a call to 911. Because of the remote area of the wreck, and the occupants being unfamiliar with the area, it took law enforcement officers from Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Kanab City Police, UHP, and Utah Division of Wildlife Resources almost 50 minutes to locate the wreck.

The wreck occurred approximately five miles East of Glendale Utah on the Glendale Bench Road. The injured passengers were treated at the scene and transported by Kane County Ambulance to the Kane County Hospital in Kanab, Utah.

At the time of this press release, both of the injured passengers were still at Kane County Hospital. The body of Miss Doramus was transported to the Utah Medical Examiner’s Office for further investigation.

As a side note to this story, Jaylyne gave birth to a baby two weeks ago. The baby was safe in Kanab with its father at the time of the accident.
